Florida is a southeastern state in the United States which is located on the Gulf Coast. Tallahassee is the state capital. Florida is bordered to the north by Georgia and Alabama, to the west by the Gulf of Mexico and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Jacksonville is the biggest city and the South Florida metropolitan area is the biggest metropolitan area in the southeastern U.S. In 2010, The state of Florida had a projected population of 18,801,310 according to the United States Census Bureau, making it the 4th most populous state in the country. Florida measures an area of 65,755 square mile and this ranks it 22nd in size within the 50 U.S. states.
Florida has the longest shoreline in the contiguous United States. The coastline encompasses around one thousand three hundred fifty miles. A big area of the state is located on a peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Straits of Florida. Geographically, it is marked by the threat of hurricanes, by the omnipresence of water and by an expansive coastline. A large portion of the state is at or near sea level. The highest natural point is at Britton Hill and this part is 105 m or 345 feet above sea level. The terrain in this place is characterized by sedimentary soils.
The weather in Florida varies from tropical in the south to subtropical in the north. Different symbolic species are situated within this unique landscape. The American alligator, the manatee and the Florida panther could be found within the Everglades. The Everglades is one of the most popular and known parks within the world.
During the year 1523, Juan Ponce de Leon, the Spanish explorer discovered the land which is now Florida. He named it La Florida, which literally means "Flowery Land", when he first landed there in Pascua, Florida. Before it gained statehood in the US in the year 1845, this area was a challenge for the European colonial powers who governed it. It was a primary location of the Seminole Wars against the Indians, as well as racial segregation post American Civil War.
Florida nowadays, is distinguished it's raising of lots of environmental concerns, by its large Hispanic community and it's high population growth. The financial system relies a lot on agriculture, transport and tourism that developed late during the 19th century. Florida is popular for the Kennedy Space Center, its production of Oranges and for its amusement parks.
Due to the different inheritances, the culture in Florida is a reflection of several influences. Anglo-American, Native American, Hispanic and African American heritages can be found everywhere from the architectural designs to the cuisine. This naturally beautiful location has attracted various writers like Tennessee Williams, Ernest Hemingway and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Florida continues to attract many athletes and celebrities. It is internationally popular for water sports, golf, tennis and auto racing.
