Situated within the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic area of the US is the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is bordered by New Jersey to the east, Ohio to the west, Ontario, Canada and New York to the north and Delaware and Maryland to the south, with West Virginia to the southwest. The state capital is Harrisburg. Pennsylvania has its four most densely inhabited cities being Erie, Allentown, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania has 57 miles of shoreline along the Delaware Estuary and fifty one miles of coastline along Lake Erie. According to the 2000 and 2010 census, the state has a strong African American population combined with amongst the largest White American populations.

The Gross State Product of Pennsylvania was $553.3 billion in the year 2008, making it the 6th ranked state within the United States. The financial system will rank 18th all around the globe if the state of Pennsylvania were an independent country. The state however ranks 26th in the nation for per capita GSP at approximately $35,641.

The majority of the state is rural, which affects a lot of the economy and politics of the state. The city of Pittsburgh is in the southwest corner, the city of Philadelphia is situated in the southeast corner, Erie is in the northwest corner. Situated in the central eastern region, Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton is a big urban manufacturing center. Philadelphia is home to 6 Fortune 500 companies. There are more found in the suburbs, like for example, King of Prussia; it is a leader in the financial and insurance trade.

There are 8 Fortune 500 companies found within Pittsburgh. Some of these comprise: U.S. Steel. PPG Industries and H.J. Heinz. GE Transportation Systems is even the biggest producer of train locomotives in the USA and they are situated within Erie.

The biggest private employer within the Commonwealth is Wal-Mart, like nearly all of the states. The University of Pennsylvania is the second. According to statistics from January the year 2010, Pennsylvania's unemployment rate is 8.8%.
